Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month became a national celebration on March 7th, 1981. Today, we celebrate Women’s History Month to admire how much women have impacted this country and what women have faced to get where they are currently and how much further they can go. March is a time to remember and thank the inspiring women that surround us all.
“Men have held not just the political power, but the economic, social, religious, cultural, and educational power. Just in recent times have we seen change on that front,” Amy Jones, IHS social studies teacher and social studies instructional coach said.
From Abigail Adams telling her husband to “remember the ladies” when visualizing a government for America, to suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton fighting for women’s right to vote, to the rise of feminism and Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first female vice president, American women have fought for equality throughout the nation’s history.
There are numerous important events and moments in women’s history that we should honor during this month of March. Scroll through the gallery to look at a few historic women and moments who have made an impact.
Throughout the month, we also polled students about women that have inspired them, not only during Women’s History Month, but women who have inspired them for years and continue to do so. Some of those women included Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, Emma Watson, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Malala Yousafzai.
This month of March, we hope the students of IHS take the time to go tell their moms, grandmothers, sisters, female teachers, coaches and all of the important women in their lives that they appreciate everything they do and continue to fight for.
