The Future Farmers of America club (FFA) is getting ready for the annual Texas State Fair.

This date falls on Agriculture Awareness Day, where FFA students participate in fun activities and celebrate the importance of agriculture in America. 

Kassandra Klakamp, head of the FFA, details what they will partake in at the Texas State Fair.

“The kids can play a bunch of games, go to the petting zoo, go to our different booths and watch our shows that are about honoring the FFA,” said Klakamp. “They also get to make connections with not only other Frisco FFA students, but other Texas FFA students as well.”

The Independence High School (IHS) FFA plans on participating and competing at more events this year than just the Texas State Fair. 

“We have our next meeting coming up on October 7, where we’ll have some fun with some Halloween themes, and we’re preparing now for our LDE (leadership development event contest) with a few different teams involved such as a chapter quiz team and a broadcasting team,” she said. “They have a podcast where they talk about agriculture topics, and we’re just preparing for those, hoping to bring more banners home like these!”

Klakamp shares what she enjoys most about teaching and being a part of the FFA.

“I get to show students all the different possibilities they can do, such as becoming a farmer, rancher, or a floral designer.” she said. “I get to show them the world of opportunity there is with agriculture.”

Liliana Hunt, president of the FFA, highlights what events are to come when the FFA students arrive at the fair.

“We will usually bus with another school such as Liberty or Centennial. When we get to the fair, students are free to explore anything they want,” said Hunt.

Hunt shares some of her favorite things about being a part of the FFA. 

“What I enjoy the most about being a part of FFA is just teaching others about what it means to be in FFA and to be a part of the agriculture department. People think a lot of the things that come with FFA are mainly focused on animals or becoming a vet, and it’s a lot more than that,” she said. “I raise animals, as do most of our officers, but there are a lot of people who don’t raise animals who like the plant or soil aspect. I just enjoy teaching others, and I love raising my animals.”
