Orchestra’s Spring Trip
Historic architecture, seafood restaurants, and beautiful beaches are what Galveston, Texas is known for.
This academic year, the IHS Orchestra is planning to go to Galveston for its spring trip.
Even though the trip is in March, permission slips were already sent out to give students enough time to decide whether they would like to participate in this team bonding activity.
“The fee is $485. [Giving students permission slips early] allows them to pay in installments if needed,” said Kathryn Sabrsula, IHS Orchestra teacher. “It also gives students time to plan ahead.”
Some of the activities included this year are going to Galveston’s Pleasure Pier, Sandcastle Building Workshop, Dolphin Watch Cruise, admission to Space Center Houston, and admission tickets to the Houston Astros Game.
The Sandcastle Building Workshop is exactly what it sounds like. An expert comes in to teach students the tips and tricks of building a sandcastle.
“I think it would be really interesting to properly learn how to build a sandcastle from an expert,” said Dola.
Not only will they be participating in these activities, but they will also be going to Galveston to attend a competition.
“I’m really looking forward to competing,” said Stuthi Sunil, Orchestra member, and violin player. “It’s fun to prepare for it and it’s good exposure.”
The competition takes place throughout the trip and they practice for it all year.
“We usually have our music beforehand, and we practice every day in Orchestra,” said Sunil.
The format for the competition is different compared to competitions in the district.
“Different orchestras from different areas play on certain days,” said Dola. “Judges decide which team is the best and that team wins the trophy.”
Last year, they won multiple trophies for best orchestra playing of the day at the competition and they hope to do the same again this year.
