After months of preparing, Independence’s first play of the school year, “Puffs” is finally here, and for fans of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” franchise, the performance is a must-see.
Written by playwright Matt Cox, “Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic,” draws its inspiration from Rowling’s original books. The play mirrors the same time span as the book series, and depicts a school divided into four houses, consisting of the ‘Puffs,’ ‘Braves,’ ‘Smarts,’ and ‘Snakes.’
The story centers around three wizards who are sorted into the Puffs. Wayne, an orphan with a desire to be a hero, Megan, a witch desperate for her mother’s approval, and Oliver, a math prodigy. As they navigate through school, the story of the series’ original characters is also satirically featured from their perspective.
What makes the play particularly appealing is its incorporation of Harry Potter references, while also introducing new characters. Fans of the original series will be excited to see some of their favorite characters make an appearance, including Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Cedric Diggory.
Additionally, the newer characters added give the viewer a unique perspective to Rowling’s universe, by focusing on other houses. Throughout the story, the cast pokes fun at the book characters’ obsession with Harry, keeping the mood lighthearted.
Walking into the set for the first time, the play’s elaborate backdrop stands out. From the candles suspended from the ceiling to the detailed architecture displayed in the doors of the Puffs’ common room, it is clear that every iconic detail from the books has been accounted for.
The show also has some notable sequences, including multiple slow-motion scenes at pivotal plot points. Here, the effort put in by the actors to remain synchronized, coupled with masterful use of lighting and sound, helps the audience be transported into the characters’ minds. For example, in fight scenes, actors are effectively able to capture the characters’ fear and do an excellent job of portraying the magical spells.
Ultimately, through its stellar performances by the cast and intricate set design, “Puffs” offers a refreshing take on the “Harry Potter” universe, but with a magical flair that’s all its own.
