Students give to senior citizens

HOSA students went to Baybrook Village Nursing Home to give flowers to the residents.

Junior Tina Nguyen collaborated with the Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA to make and hand out flower arrangements to the elderly.

This activity known as the Baybrook Village Nursing Home project may have just looked like a way to earn community services hours, but after the students volunteered it turned out to be much more.

“I saw this article online and it was this family and they brought flowers to the nursing home and it was kind of like a company. So, I searched up online if they had any around Dallas but they didn’t so, I decided to start my own project,” Nguyen said.

On March 2nd, these students came together to understand the importance of helping others.

“It’s a way to interact with your community and get closer to a new group of people and do something good for the community just to make people happier,” Nguyen said.

“Our community does so much for us and it’s only fair that we give back to our community and everything that it does for us,” sophomore Nimah Khan said.

The HOSA advisor, Rebecca Williams, said it’s important for students to contribute to these projects.

“This project in particular really gives back to a community that is often overlooked in the nursing home population and the residents are often lonely… I really hope the students can learn how to brighten someone’s day and how much fun they can have by doing something really small and have such a big impact on people,” Williams said.

Overall, Nguyen hopes this project influences others to give back to their community.

“It’s rewarding to see what a little action like this community project can have on others and kind of inspire others to do the same,” she said.
