FISD adds “Trending Topics” section to district site
Frisco Independent School District’s (FISD) newly implemented web page “Trending Topics” addresses hot-button topics which are popular among parents and students.
“Hot-button topics” are issues that elicit strong emotions from individuals. Known to be extremely divisive among groups of people, they are perceived as controversial through political and social lenses.
From Critical Race Theory in the classroom to district-wide stances on LGBTQIA+ restroom practices, the “Trending Topics” page sheds light on national topics impacting students’ education. National-level topics addressed on the page also includes a specific section on the controversy behind library books.
In addition to national topics, the page also addresses local topics pertaining to Frisco’s community. District stances on school zoning modifications address concerns regarding the rezoning of students to other FISD school campuses. Other local topics regard aspects unique to the district such as grading practices and social-emotional learning.
The district plans to update the page as community-centered topics arise.
In a recent Frisco Enterprise article, FISD’s assistant communications director Meghan Cone said, “We [the district] plan to add new trending topics as they emerge in the community and to move information related to existing topics to other parts of our website as they are no longer trending in the greater dialogue.”
Parents and students can explore the page to better understand the district’s stances on each topic. Each subpage within the “Trending Topics” section includes a brief explanation of the topic at hand, notation of state, and federal policy (in regard to the respective topic), the latest updates on district practices, and specialized sections addressing any misunderstandings.
FISD students familiar with the page appreciate the transparency of district practices and philosophy.
“I think it’s nice that the district is putting these topics on the site,” says Jeevika Balaji, IHS senior. “These are topics that some teachers even try to avoid answering in the classroom so it’s great that the district is trying to be more informative,”
